About Rowan Tree Designs, York - Sonia Curry

Rowan Tree Designs is the website of Sonia Curry, a Dressmaker and Jeweller working in a variety of materials to create pieces that make women feel special every day.

Most of the items on my site are one-off pieces, although you will see themes running through the pieces of jewellery on the site, and I am working towards producing my own (small) range of clothing designs at some point in the future.

Dressmaking
Most of my dressmaking is custom made to people's request to their specifications. While I'm always happy to create dresses for special occassions (who could complain about getting asked to work with lovely silks and velvets?!) more than anything I love creating items which are unique and special in their own right but are designed to be worn and enjoyed on a regular basis. I try to create pieces which will last and won't look 'dated' after a year or so, and like to work with flowing shaped that flatter the figure.

I also have a bit of a weakness for cloaks and capes (as do some of my friends), so you'll see a few of them on here as well.

Jewellery
I work in a variety of materials to produce unique pieces (even if several are along a theme each piece is a little bit different to the next) in everything from soft crochet cotton or coloured metal wire through to brass and precious metals.

I love working in cotton because it is so soft but at the same time can be used to surprising effect to create sculptural pieces which bounce back into shape or can be coaxed into other shapes as desired, and it is tougher than you'd think. The same is true of coloured wire (although it's not soft in the same way that cotton is!) it's light and pliable but has a wonderful sculptural quality as you can see from some of the pieces on here.

Precious metals, along with brass which I do like to use from time to time, have a different quality entirely but I rate them just as highly. When I'm working in metal I look to create pieces with a modern feel that either depend on the finish of the metal and design to look their best, or which set off the beauty of the stone the metal is surrounding. Most of my work in metal is at someone's request, so if you like my work and would like something making then drop me a line and we can take it from there.

Where can you purchase my work?
I don't have a shop (if you wish to visit my workshop then see here for more info) and my work is currently only available to purchase online but I do exhibit at a number of craft fairs within Yorkshire throughout the year - for details of when and where please see the events page
